From teen idol to reclusive genius, Walker lived many lives - Pitchfork

Scott Walker’s journey from 60s pop idol as lead singer of the Walker Brothers to radical explorer and film composer is one of the most extraordinary stories in music

Born Noel Scott Engel in Ohio in 1943, Scott appeared in Broadway musicals from the age of 11. He played bass guitar in various LA bands before moving to London in the mid-60s with the Walker Brothers

It was with the Walkers that Scott wrote his first songs, driven by a sense of isolation and his paralysing fear of live performing, as the pressures of fame brought him to the edge of despair

"I was within an inch of...giving everything up" Scott Walker

Six years since his death in 2019, the signs of Walker's influence are everywhere - in music, art, film and literature - while the fascination surrounding the American exiled in London is greater than ever

Following the Walker Brothers' split in 1967, Scott Walker went on to record the series of solo albums Scott 1-4 which have taken on legendary status: songs of city life and lives on the margins, exploring desire, sexuality, loss, war, death and myth

Walker's career was punctuated by gaps and silences. In the 90s Walker reemerged after a decade-long absence with Tilt, a totally self-penned album of a radical nature for someone from the pop world, recorded with producer Peter Walsh

The last decade and a half of Walker's career was filled with numerous projects, including the albums The Drift and Bish Bosch, film scores, collaborations with artists like Natasha Khan, and his final album with Sunn O))), which he felt was "pretty perfect"

'In one throw, the Walker Brothers were made. They kept racking up hits, one doomed ballad after another, and they became more hysterically screamed over than anyone outside the Stones. The only snag was, Engel was almost as unhappy as he looked.'

Nik Cohn, 1969

Scott will be the deepest dive into the life and music of the elusive artist who pushed the boundaries of what music could be

"He took music to a place that it hasn’t actually ever been since" Brian Eno
